Anonymous asked: A Black Widow/Valkyrie friendship is cool, but i'm still ticked they removed Shang-Chi and War Machine, the only POC in the book, for more blond white dudes. Now i'm conflicted, because Nat and Nal being friends is something i want to read.

I’m less than thrilled about that, too, and have said so in a variety of places!! Remender knows how I feel. War Machine is at least coming back for the AvX event, but the way issue #22 opened with a Muslim terrorist cliche didn’t make me feel much better about the line-up changes. Especially because we got such a great Shang-Chi issue out of Ellis, and he wrote Natasha better, so far, too.

There’s enough good in Secret Avengers right now to make me wonder what’s going to happen next, and to see where Remender’s run is going— he’s clearly looking to provide the longform character drama the series has been lacking to date. But there’s enough notsureifwant.jpg, especially with the race issues, that I’m not completely sold on it yet. The Black Widow/Val plot is just something that’s been teased, but that I’m obviously intrigued by. And for me, at least, reading superhero comics that almost requires cultivating a double vision— you don’t need to see past the Greg Land covers and questionable continuity decisions, but you need to be able to like the good things in spite of them. That’s not to say I blame anyone for dropping the book (or any book!) for whatever reasons, because we all have whatever biases we have, and that’s okay. But it is why I’m still buying and reading, that potential glimmer of good things.

Which I’ll continue to post about here as they happen!! But yeah, I completely understand where you are coming from.
